Meet the Local: Victoria Durrer-Gasse

Designer & Curator, La Galeria Elefante

Victoria

There are certain individuals who seem to embody the spirit of Ibiza so effortlessly that their story becomes inseparable from the island itself. Victoria Durrer-Gasse is one of them.

Originally from the UK, Victoria’s relationship with Ibiza began in childhood, spending long, sun-drenched summers on the island with her family. Drawn back time and time again by its unique rhythm and beauty, she eventually made a permanent connection some twenty years ago, purchasing her own home on what she affectionately calls “the Indigo Island.”

Her creative journey began in Geneva, where she studied textile design, later launching her own clothing line. What started as a personal artistic pursuit evolved organically into something much greater—today culminating in the wonderfully eclectic world of La Galeria Elefante.

Stepping inside the gallery is less like entering a shop and more like discovering a living, breathing expression of Victoria herself. The space opens generously into a large, light-filled room that flows seamlessly out onto a charming terrace, revealing a carefully curated collection of objects, textiles, and treasures—every corner infused with her unmistakable energy and eye for beauty.

At the heart of her work lies a deep social consciousness. Victoria collaborates with artisan communities around the world, as well as here in Ibiza, supporting women’s groups who handcraft many of the pieces found within the gallery. The result is a collection rich not only in texture and colour, but also in meaning and connection.

Many items are entirely unique—one-off designs, some created by Victoria in her own home studio. There is a playful, almost dreamlike quality throughout, perhaps influenced by her time working at the Alice in Wonderland Museum. That sense of curiosity and wonder is ever-present; she has a gift for reimagining objects, transforming them into something unexpected, joyful, and full of character.

An embroidered bolero inspired by her grandmother, a feather-adorned bohemian lamp, or a vividly coloured textile—each piece tells its own story. Colour is abundant, but never overwhelming; instead, it feels celebratory. As Victoria herself puts it, everything is made with “love and laughter.”

When asked to describe the philosophy behind both her life and her work, she smiles, eyes sparkling, and offers a poetic reflection:

“We are colourful beachcombers, nomadic drifters, star gazers, mothers of sons, weavers and traders, and lovers of beautiful things.”

It is this sentiment—of freedom, creativity and connection—that defines La Galeria Elefante, and indeed Ibiza itself. A place shaped by individuals like Victoria, whose passion and authenticity leave an indelible mark on the island’s cultural landscape.
